Speaker BIO - Keith Hammelman, PE

Keith is a Principal with CannonDesign and has nearly 30 years of experience in the design of HVAC, Plumbing, and Fire Protection systems. He is a licensed Professional Engineer, a leader within the ASHRAE community, and is also the Firm Discipline Leader for the Mechanical Engineering Department of CannonDesign.  He is a member of multiple ASHRAE Technical Committees including TC 9.7 - Education Facilities, TC 1.7 - Business Management and General Legal Education, and TC - 9.10 Laboratory Systems.  At CannonDesign he spends his time working with teams on projects which range in size and complexity across multiple Healthcare, Laboratory, and Educational Facility typologies. As a leader at CannonDesign he has worked on projects in Illinois but also across the country and internationally. He draws on this vast knowledge to provide solutions which are specific to the project needs.

The healthcare industry, while a significant energy user, also has considerable potential for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. This presentation will provide information and strategies on how decarbonization can be achieved by electrifying major infrastructure and localized systems, followed by adopting renewable energy sources. We will delve into how decarbonization is closely tied to electrification and serves as a critical step towards achieving net zero emissions through extensive system electrification in healthcare facilities. Embracing these approaches, alongside the integration of renewable electricity generation methods like solar photovoltaics and wind turbines, charts the course to net zero. Furthermore, we will outline interim and impending tactics, such as transitioning to cleaner fuel options and employing cogeneration, all aimed to curtail carbon emissions and move towards the ultimate objective of carbon neutrality.
