Jason Atkisson, P.E.

Jason Atkisson is a Principal, and Science & Technology Market Leader, at Affiliated Engineers, Inc. in Madison, WI. He is a licensed professional engineer and has over 25 years of experience in the planning and design of mechanical systems for complex projects for institutional and corporate clients. Jason specializes in high-performance laboratory design supporting sophisticated research programs for clients throughout the United States, such as The University of Chicago, Northwestern University, Caltech, and Princeton University. Jason has held numerous chapter, regional, and society level positions within ASHRAE and is a recipient of the Distinguished Service Award. He has been a contributing author for several chapters in the ASHRAE Handbooks, is a member of TC9.10-Laboratory Systems, and is a voting member of the Technical Activities Committee.

Jim Coogan, P.E.

Jim Coogan is a principal in product development at Siemens Smart Infrastructure, with over 40 years designing controls for mechanical systems.  Jim is an original member ASHRAE’s Guideline 36 committee and leads the working group that maintains the ANSI Laboratory Ventilation standard.  Jim participates in programs with the International Institute for Sustainable Labs.  Publications include technical papers on room pressurization and laboratory ventilation.  Jim earned his SB in mechanical engineering at MIT.

 Title: Laboratory HVAC Design: The Basics

The first part of the presentation will focus on the basics of laboratory HVAC design. It will discuss common laboratory typologies, the role(s) of HVAC in a laboratory, and what standards and guidelines are available to engineers and designers. Finally, it will review common system components in laboratory design, including exposure control devices such as fume hoods. 

Part 2 covers changes in the works to ASHRAE’s published guidance on laboratory HVAC.  We’ll discuss interesting activity on Guideline 36, Standard 110, Laboratory Classification Guide and more.
