Meeting/Event Information

Illinois Chapter usually meets once each month, August through June, on Tuesdays. The Chapter’s annual golf outing and fund raiser always takes place in September. Generally 70 to 80 members gather at monthly meetings, which makes them an excellent networking opportunity for members interested in meeting and developing other contacts in the industry.

The State of Illinois requires professional engineers to complete 30 PDHs (Professional Development Hours) of training for license renewal. The Illinois Chapter ASHRAE offers educational programs with more than enough PDHs to help engineers satisfy this requirement.

Presentations from previous Chapter seminars and meetings may be downloaded after logging into the "Member Area." The Illinois Chapter of ASHRAE stores past presentations. You must be a member to access them from this website. If you are not yet a member, sign-up today or contact us for more information.

Bio:

David N. Schurk serves as Director of Healthcare Vertical Markets at Hoffman & Hoffman, Inc., where he supports sales and engineering teams in advancing complex HVAC solutions within the healthcare sector. With over four decades of industry experience, his career includes senior leadership roles with global HVAC manufacturers, spanning domestic and international markets, business development, and applied system design. An ASHRAE Distinguished Lecturer and Learning Institute instructor, David has delivered technical education worldwide on dehumidification, indoor environmental quality, and HVAC system performance. He has also served as Chair of the American Society for Healthcare Engineering (ASHE) Sustainability and Decarbonization Task Force, reflecting his leadership in advancing high-performance building strategies.

Summary:

As humidity requirements drop below what conventional cooling-based systems can reliably achieve, moisture control becomes increasingly difficult due to limitations like coil freezing, reduced efficiency, and dew point constraints. Desiccant dehumidification offers an alternative by removing moisture directly in the vapor phase, decoupling latent and sensible loads for more precise control. This approach enables consistent low humidity performance across critical applications such as healthcare, pharmaceuticals, and food processing. The presentation provides engineers with a practical understanding of system operation, design considerations, and where desiccant systems deliver the most value in HVAC applications.
