For almost 100 years, ASHRAE has supported research to improve the quality of life. ASHRAE Research impacts the industry by improving the way HVAC&R systems work, how they are applied and allow development of technical information to create standards and guidelines, which serve as the basis for testing and design practices around the world. The Society funds thousands of research projects addressing a wide range of topics.

The Feb. 10 Illinois Chapter meeting is going to be all about ASHRAE Research — however, this time we’re going to do more than talk about it. We’ve invited a few presenters who are connected to current ASHRAE Research Projects to talk about their purpose, goals and progress. We’ll begin with a detailed introduction and description of ASHRAE’s Research Promotion program. ASHRAE Presidential Member Terry Townsend, president of Townsend Engineering, Inc., Chattanooga, TN, will talk about the history and growth of ASHRAE Research. Find out how ASHRAE Research grants are awarded…what are some of major research projects currently underway…how grants are funded…and if contributions are tax deductible?

Following this overview, you’ll hear brief presentations about the following research projects. A project member will explain firsthand experiences and findings.

2. Measurements and Prediction of Waterside Fouling Performance of Internally Enhanced Tubes in Cooling Tower Applications, conducted by the University of Illinois - Champaign
3. Development of the ASHRAE Design Guide for Dedicated Outdoor - Air Systems, conducted by the Sustainable Energy Group - Madison WI
4. Measuring, Modeling, Analysis, and Reporting Protocols for Short-term M&V of Whole Building Energy Performance, conducted by the Milwaukee School of Engineering.
